This week, Dawfydd talks about his heavily facial haired Imperial Guard Commander
Marvelous Miniatures - A Man And His ‘Stache
Over the years my varied Imperial Guard armies have had variety of custom minis for their commanders. I’ve used everything from the classic Chainsaw Warrior, the Confrontation Tech Gang Leader, Kal Jerico’s metal mini, even sometimes (!) using the official GW minis for senior Guard officers.
But, like many a conscript in the Astra Militarum, something about Ursakar Creed’s mini just spoke to me. Now, when this mini released alongside the Eye of Terror campaign book I nabbed the two-pack blister containing Creed and his loyal right-hand man Jarran Kell as soon as I could, but not to use as the doughty Lord Castellan and his Colour Sergeant. Instead Kell got a chop-job for a failed kitbash (might share that someday - never did get it finished) whilst the Creed mini I wanted to use as a generic Senior Officer leading my main Command Platoon in place of the -admittedly great in it;s own right- Cadian Colonel mini from the all-metal Cadian Command Squad box, at the head of my home brew regiment the Aakaran Rifles.
This was a force I began during 3rd Edition, kitbashing the OG metal Cadians with Lasgun barrels & magazines from the plastic Catachan kit (yes, I’m a looney) as the core then adding Jungle Fighters & Necromunda in the same camo getup (dark green fatigues - a mix of Camo Green with Chaos Black, no Castellan Green at this point - with triangular camo using Vermin Brown) as irregular troopers. And when the plastic Cadians dropped I chose to carry on with this scheme.
Anyway, back to The Man, The Mustache, as when I was trying to come up with a way to differentiate what is a fairly blocky one-piece mini from the stock version I figured “MUSTACHE” and used some greenstuff to give him a very distinctive handlebar. And so was born Brigadier Mackenzie “Mac” Duggan, aka “The Brig”, commander of the 4th Askaran Infantry Brigade, honestly still one of my fave paintjobs.
